About the Vineyard

Two Coyote Vineyard is owned by two couples, John and Judy Chiles and Kirk Strosahl and Patti Robinson. We are long-term friends and share a love of good food, good wine and good times. John and Judith divide their time between their home in Port Townsend, Washington and their cottage (the “casita”) in the vineyard. Kirk and Patti live in their new home (the “casa”) in the vineyard and have to deal with all the fun of living there.

As friends, we go back more than 20 years together and have always dreamed of owning and operating our own vineyard! As people, we are honest, open to new ideas and down to earth in our approach to any task. We hope that our professional associations both now and into the future with growers and winemakers will teach us the many nuances of this fine art!

Age: Site prepared in 2003 and first planting in 2004.

Site Preparation: The site was ripped and cross ripped to a depth of 4 ft to re-vitalize the soil. We also applied preventive treatments for residual fungi and pests prior to planting.

Row spacing: 8 feet by 4 feet.

Plant Density: 1392 plants per acre. This higher density allows for less grape clusters per plant, thus promoting more even ripening with moderate yields.

Irrigation: Zone based, row -controlled drip system with overhead frost control system on the southeast facing slope. This state of the art irrigation design provides maximum crop protection and allows us to individually tailor irrigation not just by block, but by row.

Manager: Phil Cline functions as vineyard manager.

About the Vineyard

Jim Holmes owns and operates Red Mountain’s top vineyard. Planted in 1975, Ciel du Cheval is 120 acres and includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo.

Holmes sells his grapes to more than 20 wineries and has partnered with Quilceda Creek and DeLille Cellars to have their own adjacent vineyards. The supply of Ciel du Cheval grapes could become scarce in future years, as Holmes plans to start his own winery.

Ciel du Cheval, in typically the warmest area of Washington, receives nearly 3,300 heat units annually.
